Safety to Product | Building construction technology that field crews actually adopt

About

Nick Rogoff

I came into construction as a Safety Manager and spent five years trying to solve compliance problems the traditional way: more training, stricter enforcement, better documentation. None of it worked the way I expected.

What actually worked was treating safety problems like product problems. I built systems that field crews chose to use voluntarily. In doing so, I learned things you can't get from market research. Why offline mode isn't optional. Why mobile-first means a two-minute form, not a five-minute one. Why bilingual isn't just a nice-to-have. I learned these by building products that had to survive real jobsite conditions, and watching what happened when they didn't.

The results were hard to argue with: a hot work permit system that hit 73% voluntary adoption with zero enforcement, an asset tracking system with a 50x ROI, tools that are still running without me. Over $500K in documented impact.

That's when I realized I'd been doing product management all along; and that I'm better at keeping people safe by building great products than by enforcing policies. I'm making it my full-time focus.
